Sažetak
The function of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system) in the control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is not completely understood. With aim to elucidate this problem, we studied the effects of several drugs affecting GABAergic transmission on the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (CS) secretion in rats. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of GABA decreased plasma ACTH and CS levels in female rats. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of a low dose (1 mg/kg) of diazepam, a drug which facilitates the action of GABA at GABAA receptors, also decreased, while the same dose of picrotoxin, a non-competitive antagonist of GABA, increased plasma CS and ACTH levels. The results suggest that GABA exerts an inhibitory control over the HPA axis activity.
