Sažetak
Phosphate contained in the wastewater can cause eutrophication when it is discharged into closed natural water bodies. The enhanced biological phosphate removal is preferred process of phosphate removal from wastewater. This process is based on the accumulation of soluble phosphate present in wastewater in the form of nonsoluble polyphosphate granule inside cells of bacteria, which therefore are called phosphate-accumulating bacteria (PAB). Currently attention is being drawn to the implementation of zeolites in the wastewater treatment process in order to achieve a higher efficiency of the phosphate removal from wastewaters. Depending on the type of zeolite, different interactions between material and PAB were observed. High siliceous natural clinoptilolite tuffs allow the immobilization of PAB on the surface of particles and increase the number of total PAB in wastewater. The improved phosphate removal from wastewater containing the natural clinoptilolite tuffs is a function of high concentration of metabolically active PAB. In spite, the low siliceous commercial synthetic zeolites LTA display the toxic effect against PAB at concentrations higher than 0.1 g/L, thus causing the failure of phosphate removal from wastewater. The toxic effect of zeolites LTA is explained by the hydrolytic dissolution and leaching of aluminosilicate molecules from material.
