Sažetak
A multi proxy approach (cladocerans, foraminifers, geochemistry/mineralogy, ostracods, pollen), waqs performed on a core sequence from fresh to brakish/marine sediments from the northern Adriatic Valun bay (Isle of Cres, Croatia).
Mean July air temperature and timberline fluktuations were inferred from a modern South Alpine, Pinus mugo (Dwarfed pine) pollen altitude/temperature relation model. An initial climate amelioration probably after the last glacial maximum indicated a steep temperature gradient at the top. This climate and vegetation progress was interrupted by a marked climate regression which was related to a cold period 16 to 14 ky BP. The followingcomplex until approx. 12 ky BP showed at average cool summer and a higher moisture availibility. Increased summer temperature with maximum approximating modern, and a climate fluctuation, characterize the following period related with Allerod. The multiphase Younger Dryas appeared as a distinct climate deterioration, with a July air temperature decline 3-3,5 C when compared with Allerod. During early Holocene, a change in vegetation was related with the onset of a pluvial period in the Adriatic at 8.4 ky BP.
When the Adriatic sea-level was below -59 m a.s.l., a freshwater lake has existed. Salinity by the rise in sea-level and probably by karst transmissions, and water temperature increased after the end of cold period 14 ky BP. The marine ingression into the coastal lake basin took place at about 12.1 ky BP. During lower Younger Dryas, mid-Preboreal, and the Holocene pluvial period, increased freshwater incursions most probably resulted in lowered salinity in the bay of Valun.
