Sažetak
Strategy scholars have researched foreign entry mode strategies and much current research is utilizing a transaction cost approach through utilization of the target market’s institutions. Although intuitively cogent, especially in transitional economies such as in Central and Eastern Europe, our research suggests that this strategy could be fraught with ethical considerations. This research explores through a questionnaire of four hundred Croatian businessmen and 92 Croatian business students, the ethical concerns and type of personnel that MNCs should be aware in transitional economies. In specific, our research proposes that older employees are more unethical then younger employees, suggesting that the older established institutions utilized by MNCs to lower transaction costs may very well be staffed by the older employees who have had to use unethical practices in the past to navigate pre-transitional governmental constraints. The research also found women employees to be more ethical, but found no significance in the level of education of the employee. This research cautions strategy scholars in focusing entirely upon lowering initial transaction costs in foreign entry mode without considering the possible long term implications of employee behavior.
