Sažetak
Traditional agriculture is the activity that has left the most significant trace on the areas in Littoral Croatia. The deep dependency on certain natural conditions of the Mediterranean, and under the influence of social circumstances, the traditional way of using the land has generated a large number of landscape patterns most often divided by drywalls. That includes patterns such as terraces, grasslands, crop fields, sheepfolds, sinkholes, gullies and many other characteristic types of divisions of land. Landscapes that are marked with these types of structures represent the cultural heritage and are bearers of the national, Mediterranean and European identity and are therefore considered cultural landscapes. Due to their spatial, historical and ecological specificity there are among them those that are outstanding on a national and international level, and therefore their registration and protection is unquestionable. Today these landscapes are on the one hand left to natural succession and on the other hand to the inevitable processes of globalization. Globalization is manifested in the intensification of agriculture that is consolidation of land, as well as the strengthening of tourism visible from the fast and unplanned spreading of settlements and road infrastructure. In Croatia the value of cultural landscapes has not been recognized yet. The strategy for their management has not been defined, and therefore neither has the methodology of their identification and protection. For this reason the drafting of atlas of outstanding cultural landscapes of the Croatian Littoral was initiated. It was necessary to do research whose foremost purpose was to define the history of the development of the cultural landscapes of the Croatian Littoral, as well as identifying their basic types. What followed was the determining and elaboration of the indicators and criteria of valorization of the cultural landscapes with the goal of setting up a methodological framework for the identification of the most valuable ones. Using the mentioned method a certain number of outstanding cultural landscapes of the Croatian Littoral have been identified. This paper will present the methods and the results which were derived from using them.
