Sažetak
Unicellular marine algae were used as model soft particles and the fast dropping mercury electrode as the adhesion sensor in order to get inside into the rule adhesion processes might play in single particle electrochemistry. Our approach is based on measurement of double-layer charge displacement by adhesion of single cells: the flow of compensating current reflects the dynamics of adhesive contact formation and spreading of a cell. Spike-shaped amperometric signals have the peak current in microamper range, duration of 5-10 ms and displaced charge in nC range. This technique thus allows us a precise measurement of the contact area and the distance of closest approach between a cell and the electrode. The only hypothesis used in interpreting the signals is validity of the electrical double-layer model.
