Sažetak
We hypothesized that the implementation of the GINA program, in form of widespread asthma-related educational activities undertaken at the national level, have improved the control of asthma, which is reflected in decreased hospital admission rate. The GINA program was implemented as a series of workshops for general practitioners, totaling 29 workshops throughout Croatia, 3280 participants with more than 5000 translated guidelines booklets distributed. Complementary activities included programs of continuing education for pharmacists and Training for trainers courses for chest physicians. To objectify the successfulness of educational activities we have examined changes in attitude towards the prescriptions of anti-inflammatory medicines. To test our hypothesis, the hospitalization rates for asthma for the entirety of Croatia (1993-1998) was compared with total dispensation of inhaled corticosteroids (1995-1999). During the observed period, the use of inhaled corticosteroids significantly increased (231%). The hospitalization rate for asthma showed a significant upward trend between 1993 and 1996 (9.2, 17.1, 8.2% respectively), but since than, asthma admission rates decreased (6, 4%). We believe that these trends were primarily caused by the widespread educational activities targeted toward adequate treatment of airway inflammation in asthma and proclaiming its self-control.
