Sažetak
The cathedral in Šibenik is a masterpiece of the Croatian Renaissance architecture. It is unique by the singular vault system, made of large thin stone slabs, wedged into slender stone arches - akin to the timber vaults a carena di nave. Due to the high-quality limestone, taken from the nearby island of Brač (Brazza), there has been no need to cover the vaults with roofs: the semicircular barrel vaults above the nave, transept and presbytery, and the segmental vaults above the aisles have always been visible in the exterior. The vaults are tightened with iron tie-rods, which enables slender substructure, without any buttressing system. These tie-rods are an integral and original part of the structure, as witnessed by the documents saved in the archives of the Šibenik diocese. Many documents on the fabrica de S. Jacobo Chiesa Catedral de Sebenico (sic!) are saved in these archives. From the contracts we know the names of the protomagistri, and even of the modest lapicidae, as well as the exact periods in which certain parts of the buildings were constructed, the origin of the stone, etc. Due to this knowledge, and to the laboratory research, we were able to repair the war damage of the dome with the same white limestone from the quarries of the island of Brač. The demountable structure of the dome enabled the disassembling of the dome and the reuse of all undamaged original elements.
