Sažetak
The thesis examines the phenomenon of Internet slang, a type of slang that has only recently surfaced into the mainstream but already created quite a stir. It provides various examples of slang and explores its development in the last 30 years, in addition to possible developments in the future. Since literature on this subject is still quite scarce, the author collected most of the examples from websites, forums and blogs – the places where Internet slang is crafted. Also, statistical data gathered from various sources, concerning age, language, time spent online and so on, is appraised. The author singles out cases of Internet slang usage in speech and gives a brief analysis on different opinions regarding the impact it had (and continues to have) on the English language. Furthermore, several instances in languages other than English are given, demonstrating the extent of such slang. After examining all these details, the author concludes that Internet slang will most definitely have an impact on the English language, but not to such a degree as it is sometimes feared.
