Sažetak
The promise of nanomedicine is to make available different nanosystems whose novel, usually size, shape and surface-dependent properties are exploited to combat the disease of interest. General issues related to physicochemical and biological properties of different nanoparticles (polymeric and metallic) are provided. Current problems associated with the use of nanoparticles in medicine are discussed and suggestions are made how to solve some of these problems. The chapter focuses on interactions between nanoparticles and cells and factors determining these interactions. Special attention is paid to oxidative stress and mechanisms involved in cell death induced by quantum dots. Several examples of transgenic mice for real time imaging and the assessment of biocompatibility of novel nanomaterials are presented. Such animals can be used as suitable and complementary screening in vivo assays for nanotechnological products as a complementary approach to more common biochemical and toxicological methods.
