Sažetak
Multiculturalism can be seen as maximal opening of a culture toward others, and therefore also as a realization, in every culture, of the potentials to develop communication with other cultures. Such model of understanding of culture and multiculturality stimulates interest not only for the building of cultural pluralism in democratic society, but also for multicultural education and multicultural programs in schools. For that reason, various international organizations such as UNESCO, Council of Europe, and European Union encourage and support the growing interest that orient the building of cultural pluralism in democratic society toward developing multicultural instruction and multicultural programs in schools. These organizations' documents emphasize that such orientations can lead toward solutions for coexistence in multicultural societies and establishing understanding and trust between cultures. The idea of intercultural education is promoted in this sense. However, one must consider the limitations, and differences in the effect that the education process has on its participants, i.e. on the social consciousness and behavior of students. This paper focuses detecting these effects, in a post-war Mediterranean society undergoing transition. The analysis is based on the results of the research conducted among high school and university students in the city of Split about their attitudes toward people of different ethnic bacground and religious affiliation, and how and to what extent they were shaped by education. The two researches which will be reviewed in this paper were conducted in 2006 and 2007 on the sample N=217 (107 high school students and 110 university students) and N=405 (196 high school students, and 206 university students) respectively.
