Sažetak
Objective of this report was to evaluate can art therapy, as a non-pharmacological intervention, can be beneficial in a person with dementia (PWD). We have presented a case report of an Alzheimer's disease patient who was involved in art therapy while attending the Day care centre for PWD. Alzheimer's Disease Societies Croatia (ADSC), which is located in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, has been running the Counselling centre from its foundation in 1999. We have monthly meetings for families of PWD and all others interested. The career (wife) and Mr. Zvonko, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease of moderate stage, came one day to the Counselling centre. He was already on standard pharmacological treatment with antidementives ; however, behavioural disturbances were present. After his individual and family status were evaluated, he was advised to attend the Day care centre in a Nursing home for older and incapable people "Medvešćak" in Zagreb. This Day care centre has the longest experience in rehabilitation of PWD in Croatia, is located in the centre of the town, and the transportation for PWD is provided. The centre has occupational therapists who are providing a person-centered rehabilitation. They have agreed that for Mr. Zvonko, who was a technician, art therapy may be appropriate. Although he has never painted before developing Alzheimer's disease, most of us who knew him (including his wife) were surprised with his talent and creativity. While painting he was calm and satisfied and his overall behavior, both in the Day care centre and at home, dramatically improved. We concluded that art therapy, as an add-on non-pharmacological intervention, can be beneficial for behavioral disturbances in PWD.
