Sažetak
The idea of the „national“ in Croatian 19th-century music culture shows evolutionary tendencies. It started as a construct leading towards higher general musical standards (with Vrhovac), continued with pragmatic treatment of music as incidental to the words of rousing songs, supporting non-musical issues (in Gaj), achieved the status of a substantial part of national being (in Kukuljević), and finally, as ethnic/national art music, reached a pedestal of general interest in the homeland and in national education (in Kuhač). The idea of the „national“ in music also shows its two-sided face in the Croatian case: what usually initially bears a sound nucleus of positive feelings of patriotism, in some circumstances almost inevitably turns into nationalistic exaggerations ; what in some historical circumstances functions as part of a socio-political defence line, can turn into part of socio-political aggressiveness. Fortunately, the idea of the „national“ in music never – from its creation in the early 19th century – turned into a chauvinist movement in subsequent Croatian music and general history, which could have caused social damage on a broader scale. Excesses such as single statements by Gaj and Kuhač were largely corrected subsequently by their respective authors, and were never accepted by any Croatian social or musical-artistic group whatsoever.
