Sažetak
The influence of early social context on various aspects of child development is well known. Children who grow up in institutions have always had some disadvantages in emotional and intellectual performance, although they are assisted to make the conditions they grow up in as advanced as possible. The aim of our research was to establish: gender differences in children’s reactions to institutionalized life (concerning child’s cognitive development) Research was conducted with preschool children between the ages of 6 and 7 living in children’s homes (orphanage) and SOS villages near major cities in Croatia (Zagreb and Osijek). The number of participants in the research was 26. That is a small sample, however considering the tendency for early adoption or housing children of preschool age, those were all the children of that age who were living in the above mentioned children’s homes or SOS villages at the time of research. Their cognitive status was examined with the nonverbal intelligence test and verbal intelligence test, as well as school aptitude test, which consists of subtests relating to: factual knowledge, perception, graphomotor skills and numerical reasoning. The results showed that the girls performed significantly weaker in the following subtests of the School aptitude test: Perception test, Factual knowledge test, Tracing test, and the Non-verbal intelligence test. The mentioned finding should be included in planning assistance and in preparing children without parents for school.
