Sažetak
The enormous costs and safety issues associated with corrosion of steel in concrete have resulted in the development of a wide range of new technologies and materials to increase the durability of reinforced concrete structures and their repairs. One of these methods is the use of certain types of stainless steel, which are resistant to corrosion in concrete environment even when the concrete is highly contaminated with chlorides, as substitution of part or all reinforcement in concrete. The use of stainless steel as a replacement for carbon steel reinforcement has been limited to vital structures exposed to aggressive environments by concerns over the increase in initial construction costs. Results of accelerated corrosion testing have shown that some types of alloyed steel have very good corrosion resistance in carbonated and chloride contaminated alkaline media, simulating concrete pore solution. In order to fully research their corrosion behaviour and the possibility of their utilization as reinforcement their corrosion behaviour should be proved in laboratory and on site. The idea of the work is to determine limit states (chloride threshold, pH threshold and corrosion depth) for different levels of reinforced concrete structure degradation due to corrosion (spalling, cracking, bearing capacity loss) for different steel grades. In this research work 10 different steel grades are chosen and their corrosion behaviour will be thoroughly tested. Following steel types are evaluated: corrosion resistant austenitic and ferritic steels with lower nickel content, austenitic stainless steel, duplex steels, duplex steels with lower nickel content and black steel. In order to evaluate their corrosion behaviour a detailed experimental program was created, which consists of following testing: a) in pore solutions simulating concrete, b) embedded in concrete and exposed to laboratory simulated aggressive environment, c) in concrete in real aggressive environment. The corrosion behaviour of different types of steel reinforcement will be studied through linear polarization, potentiostatic and dynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and half-cell potential and current density measurements. The outcomes of this work will be quantification of corrosion behaviour of corrosion resistant steels for a cost benefit application in civil engineering.
