Sažetak
A special product of Pleistocene periglacial dust accumulation, loess is a widespread deposit in the Carpathian Basin. Granulometric analyses are used to identify and describe loess varieties. There are different methods to analyse laboratory data. Along with chemical parameters like calcium carbonate content some indices of grain size distribution (sorting, kurtosis, steepness and median value of grains) are generally applied, recently supplemented with further two indices: fineness grade and degree of weathering. For an exact identification of sediments, fineness grade, degree of weathering and sorting were combined into categories as they had been established for samples from key sections of other loess regions. When completing granulometric analyses the stratigraphic position was also considered. The indices are used to disclose paleogeographic conditions (extremes of cooling and warming) to separate eolian deposits from the fluvial ones and to reconstruct wind energies and directions in various stages of the Pleistocene as well as rates of sedimentation. The results of granulometric analyses lead to information to be shown on paleogeographic maps. The study has been aimed at a detailed investigation of a loess profile in the south and along the margin of the Carpathian Basin and at making it a key section in a southern region of loess formation. An uniform method had been applied to identify and evaluate climatic and environmental change during the Pleistocene and in the analyses of Quaternary deposits (primarily loesses and loess-like sediments). An important aspect was a simple and easy accessibility of values, data and information concerning the modifications in paleogeography and paleoenvironment in the database and diagrams for each data of depth along the section in concern. On the basis of granulometric parameters several cycles of sedimentation markedly separated from each other and related to different physical environments can be distinguished along the profiles.
