Sažetak
For this study, the data from State Institute for Statistics (statistical yearbooks: wheat yield, production and harvested areas) and the State Hydro meteorological Institute (precipitation and air-temperature) were used. The northwestern (NW) Croatia (total area: 15136 km2 or 26.8% of the state territory) includes seven counties. Majority of wheat growing area (75.8 %) is situated in the region of Eastern Croatia which occupies about 22% of the state territory. According status of the last three-year period (2005-2007) in the northwestern (NW) Croatia (26.8% of the state territory) is situated next 20.9 % of wheat growing area of the country. The rest of 3.3% of wheat growing area is distributed in remaining 51.2 % of the state territory in Mediterranean and mountain regions. Wheat harvested area in NW Croatia was in range from 33082 ha (2005) to 81269 ha (1998). Also, yields were in range from 2.50 t/ha (2003) to 3.99 t/ha (2006). Under more favorable environmental conditions of the 2006 growing season wheat yield in the region was for 60% higher than under less favorable conditions of the 2003 growing. The growing season 1999 was less favorable for wheat growing because of excess of precipitation in October (Bjelovar: 131 mm or 2.4 fold more compared to LTM (long- term mean 1961-1990): low share of wheat sowing in optimal term during October). Additional problem was cold autumn/winter period (mean air-temp. for November-February: 0.5 °C or for 1.6 °C lower than LTM) and delaying of late- sown wheat in development. Also, rest of wheat growth was under the higher air-temperatures (March-June: mean 15.0 °C or for 2.2 °C higher compared to LTM). The low yield in 2003 is mainly result of drought stress (Bjelovar: February-May of 2003, precipitation 99 mm or only 41% of LTM. At the same time, air-temp. was for 1.0 °C higher. Based on our experiences under conditions of eastern Croatia the higher precipitation, especially in the autumn and the lower temperatures during winter are in some connection with the lower yields of wheat.
