Sažetak
The use of bentonite, either as a component of BES (bentonite enhanced soil) or mineral component of GBR-Cs (clay geosynthetic barrier) has become a standard practice for the construction of landfills in geotechnical and hydrotechnical structures. They are used as a key component of hydraulic barrier system. Depending upon the location and function, GBR-Cs have to fulfill certain conditions. The subject of this study is Na-activated bentonite currently used for the production of additives for foundries and pet litter. The goal was to evaluate the quality and performances of Na-activated bentonite required for environmental applications and determine the possibility of potential use for liner applications. Index testing was performed by the following methods: swell index, fluid loss and water absorption capacity of bentonite. Additionally, permeability testing has been done. On the basis of the testing performed it can be concluded that the tested type of Na-activated bentonite could be used for the manufacturing of GBR-Cs.
