Sažetak
Consumption of plants containing phenolics is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases in animals. Previous researches indicate that corn (Zea mays L.) grains are very important source of phenolic antioxidants. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of hybrid and growing season on the total phenolic content in grains of eleven Croatian corn hybrids provided from Bc Institute. Hybrids were produced in same field over three growing seasons. Total phenolics were extracted with acidified 50 % methanol (pH 1.2). Content of phenolics was measured colorimetically using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent with gallic acid as standard. Total phenolic content differed among growing seasons (P<0.001), with the largest average total phenolic content in 2007 (541.88 of μg gallic acid/100 g of grain ; range from 446.89 to 599.67). Proportion of pericarp in grains was positively correlated with total phenolic content (P<0.05). Differences existed among tested hybrids, and those differences were consistent in all growing seasons. Thus, it appears that a total phenolic content in corn grain is hybrid specific trait that is not affected by growing conditions.
