Sažetak
The construction of main pipelines is heavily dependent on welding technology. Conventional manual welding technology is increasingly unable to satisfy modern pipeline requirements, not only because of welded joint quality, but also because of economics, technology and metallurgy. Human and ecological aspects of the application of automatic welding – which come fully to the fore in particularly severe working conditions along demanding routes – also need to be taken into account. Although there are constraints to the application of automatic welding, it is possible, with the right equipment, power supplies, organisation and logistics to achieve outstanding success in severe working conditions. This paper describes the application of automatic electric arc welding in the welding of pipelines made of high strength steel, the comparative advantages of automatic welding and the necessary equipment. The issue of welding of high strength pipeline steel is also briefly addressed. The experience and results of the use of automatic welding in the construction of the main gas-pipeline from Pula to Karlovac are also presented.
