Sažetak
The paper gives an overview of basic issues in preservation and conservation of old books through the most important questions and knowledge that we need have to understand preservation systematically and comprehensively. Basic terms and definitions in the field of preservation and relations between those terms are explained in the first part of the paper. The second part deals with materials that old book is made of, their structure, basic deterioration processes and ways to preserve materials. Conservation and restoration methods and techniques are presented. Also, the role of reformatting of old books is considered in the context of preservation.
