Sažetak
The Adriatic island of Cres is, concerning the value of biodiversity, one of the most important European islands. But hunters have introduced game animal species - Wild boar (Sus scrofa), Fallow deer (Dama dama) and Mouflon (Ovis musimon), some 20 years ago. Their number on island has increased exponentially and has led to an extinction crisis of the islands' endemic species. Invasive game animals significantly impact island’s ecosystems and cause serious damage to local economy. This is especially acute in the threat for the long-term survival of Eurasian Griffon (Gyps fulvus) by direct (competition for food) and indirect impact (illegal poisoning due to damages on lambs and sheep caused by wild boar, when Griffons are poisoned as “innocent victims”). The most dangerous invasive plant species on the island are Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) and Silver-leaved Nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium). Results of different methods of control and eradication of invasive animal and plant species are presented.
