Sažetak
Many scientists are investigating the use of essential oil as desinfections, antiseptics, conservans and therapeutics in inflammatory diseases of skin and mucous membrane (1,2,3,4).
For the purpose of preparation of antiseptic in caramel form, dilution method established antimicrobial activity of essential oil of sweet orange and extract of Islandic lichen. Chemical analysis proved that essential oil of sweet orange contain monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons.
These active components showed antimicrobial effect on Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, B. pumilus ( MIK 3.12-60% ), Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis ( 0.09-3.12% ), gram negative bacteria, Proteus vulgaris, Citrobacter freundi, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella tiphy ( MIK 0.39-6.25% ), Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( MIK 30% ), as wel as Candida species including; C. albicans, C. luisinatae, C. globosa, C. parapsilosis, C. tropycalis, C. kruzei, Cryptococcus neoformas and Hansenula anomala ( MIK 0.048-1.56% ). Water extract of lichen also showed antimicrobial effect on gram positive and gram negative bacteria and Candida species ( MIK 8-18% ).
For these reasons, prepared caramel, containing sweet orange essential oil and extract of Islandic lichen, had favourable antiseptic and expectorans activity as in clinical examination of 103 patients with different inflammatory processes in upper respiratory tract.
