Sažetak
The Republic of Croatia began forming its defence structure while still formally a part of the Federal state, within its Ministry of Interior. With the proclamation of independence, they were soon transferred to the newly formed Ministry of Defence. During the war the defence structure greatly increased and often changed. Zagreb, being the capital with a quarter of the country population, organized many units while many commands and institutions were also situated there. While the first flags were ceremonially granted, due to the war, such ceremonies have not been continued. Feeling need for identity symbols, the units started to produce their own flags. Most of the brigade level and higher units, institutions and commands acquired a flag by the end of the war in 1995. These flags are neither collected into one place nor studied by now. A number of flags are gathered in the Military Museum and the General Staff in Zagreb. During 2006 a number of flags were additionally produced for those units, as kind of replicas, for the use in ceremonies, enabling the original flags to be preserved from wear. The paper presents a selection of flags of the units situated in Zagreb, showing the major types of flags used, providing a general overview of the modern military tradition formed in the last decade of 20th century.
