Sažetak
This paper may serve as a point of reference for further research on the historyof social work in Croatia, rather than a detailed overview or a historical evaluation of the very dynamic socialist period that lasted 45 years. It is based on a number of sources such as official data, personal memories, recollections and analysis of the wider socio-economic context. The emphasis is on the rather neglected period from the late 1950s to the beginning of the 1970s. This period was marked by two important events for the development of the social work profession – the establishment of the first Centre for Social Work in 1959 and the beginning of publication of the journal ‘Social Work’ in 1960. The late years of this period were marked by the adoption of the Law on Social Welfare in 1969, the first law that regulated this field. Overview of the previous period from the end of the World War II until 1960 can be found in the report by Sandra Prlenda and colleagues (2006).
