Sažetak
Two-phase polymer systems containing dispersed elastomer, ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) in poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) matrix with and without filler were examined. Mixing ratio of EPDM and SAN in blends was varied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used for the morphology characterisation, and toughness and tensile strength for mechanical property comparison.
The miscibility of the polymers was clearly distinguished using the number of glass transition shown in the DSC thermograms.1 SEM supports the DSC results, assisting in understanding the blend morphology for the immiscible blends in terms of the size of the dispersed phase. The intention to increase interfacial adhesion and reduce the coarseness of the dispersed phase was achieved by adding the filler calcium carbonate. Filler used in examined EPDM/SAN blends has been treated by stearic acid. Treated filler show enhanced interaction with dispersed EPDM polymer. The finer morphology of the blend is important factor that affects the tensile strength and enhances toughness.
