Sažetak
The development of the knowledge-based society generates new needs at the level of social life and life of an individual (in the field of economy, scientific and technological development, social status and the role of an individual as a citizen, personal development and self-actualization of an individual). Education, which has a significant role in knowledge production and transfer, has also gained a significant role and new tasks in this context. Having recognized the importance of education for development, the European Union has identified common goals of education systems and systems for professional improvement in order to accelerate the process of transition toward the knowledge-based society.1 These common goals are simultaneously new domains of the key competences2: Information and communication technology, technological culture, foreign languages, entrepreneurship, interpersonal and civic competences, mathematical literacy, sciences, and learning-to-learn (knowing how to learn). Cultural expression is also discussed as one of the key domains of competences needed for work and living in the knowledge society. These goals have been further elaborated and specified as concrete tasks and the concrete work plan for their realization through the National curriculum, which is of key importance for the knowledgebased economy.
