Sažetak
Lead (Pb) is one of the most commonly used metals in industry and is highly toxic. Numerous recent evidences support the role of oxidative stress in the pathology of Pb toxicity. Namely, Pb may increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induce lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage of various tissues by altering the antioxidant system of the cells. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a highly toxic molecule and one of the most frequently used indicators of lipid peroxidation that can be used as an indicator of cell membrane injury (Esterbauer, 1996). The aim of this study was to measure concentration of MDA in plasma samples collected from 28 subjects (21–54 years of age, median 38.5) exposed to Pb working (1–34 years, median 12) in the battery production factory and 62 control subjects (19–63 years of age, median 37). The concentrations of MDA were measured using method of Drury et al., 1997 J.A. Drury, J.A. Nycyk and Cooke RWI, Clin Chim Acta 263 (1997), p. 177. Article | PDF (452 K) | View Record in Scopus | Cited By in Scopus (30)Drury et al. (1997) by HPLC with UV detector. Concentration of MDA in plasma samples of Pb-workers (3.054 ± 0.237 mmol/L ; mean ± SEM) was significantly higher than in plasma samples of controls (1.895 ± 0.133 mmol/L, P < 0.05) indicating that the increased lipid peroxidation in Pb-workers occurs before the clinical symptoms of toxicity. Since there are a number of studies on the higher rate of severe neurological diseases that are supposed to be caused by increased lipid peroxidation, Pb-workers should be thoroughly followed.
