Sažetak
This paper is essentially the report on the research carried out within the framework of the scientific-research project ¨Social integration and Collective Identities in Multiethnic Areas in Croatia¨. It discusses the existence of different types of interethnic solidarity in multiethnic areas in Croatia. It is based on three fundamental presumptions in analyzing and understanding interethnic relations and solidarity in multiethnic communities. First, in order to adequately understand multiethnic relationships and solidarity it is necessary to direct the analysis to lower level of societal aggregation – to the local level of certain multiethnic areas Second, ethnic groups, ethnic relations and interethnic solidarity in some local community are not unchangeable constants but phenomena which depend upon results of societal impacts of different actors in particular societal context. The result of impacts of various societal actors shapes permeability of the boundaries between different ethnic groups and generate different interethnic solidarity. Third, depending upon the outcome of various societal-historical circumstances which constructed different types of interethnic relations and interethnic solidarity in Croatia, we can differentiate between two basic types of multiethnic areas Thus, we can differentiate multiethnic areas that have a higher level of openness of ethnic boundaries and solidarity in interethnic relationships so-called ¨peace areas¨ and areas of lower level of openness of ethnic boundaries and interethnic solidarity so-called ¨conflicts areas¨. The results of the survey conducted during October 2008 confirm the existence of differences in levels of general openness towards the members of other ethnic groups and in level of everyday interactions between them.
