Sažetak
This paper discusses energy usage for supplying domestic hot water on Croatian islands of Primorsko-Goranska County in regard to potential savings and ecological effects when switching to solar collectors. The objective is to show solar-thermal energy as a cost-effective alternative to the consumption of conventional energy sources. The initial analysis concerns the context of domestic hot water supply on the islands, including the fluctuations during the tourist season. Therefore daily, weekly and annual DHW demand profiles are discussed. Potential solar yields on the northern Adriatic area are computed using custom software for simulating defined solar-thermal energy systems. The input parameters are either solar-thermal energy system specific data or climate specific data. Simulation results such as annual specific solar yield and solar fractional savings are summarised pointing out the economical and ecological effects at specific levels of solar-thermal energy utilisation. Replacing a portion of useful energy provided by fossil fuels and electricity with the sun as a source of thermal energy is also expected to have positive side-effects, especially on islands with no direct connection to the mainland.
