Sažetak
This paper presents a comparison between growth parameters of sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) and gilt sardine Sardinella aurita (Valenciennes, 1847). The aim of this study was to determinate and compare sardine (N= 1219) and gilt sardine (N=2033) length and age population composition, length-weight relationship, as well as the condition factor during the March 2004 - January 2009 period. All of the specimens were obtained from the catches of inshore (Virsko more) and offshore waters (Dugi Otok) in the Zadar area. Sardine total length (LT) varied from 13.0 to 19.0 cm ; average length was 16.0 ± 0.88 cm. Gilt sardine total lengths (LT) were from 10.0 to 32.5 cm, with the average length of 22.0 ± 3.65 cm. Sardine age composition varied from one (0) to nine (8+) years, and for gilt sardine from one (0) to sixth (5+) years of fish life. Sardine growth parameters were: L∞=20.5 cm, K=0.46/year, t0= -0.5 year, and for gilt sardine: L∞=34.2 cm, K=0.36/year, t0= -0.9 year. Sardine length-weight relationship indicated negative allometry (b=2.554), while gilt sardine was characterized by positive allometric growth (b=3.226). The cubic condition coefficient for sardine showed slightly higher amounts (K=0.7771 ± 0.07) than for gilt sardine (K= 0.7081 ± 0.08). Both specimens belong to the same clupeid family (Clupeidae) - they share the same ecological niche and are caught together, but all of their analyzed value parameters are different.
