Sažetak
Fish fry were censused by two types of beach seine (beach seine with and beach seine without sac). Both sampling procedures were performed during the day in July and September 1998 at three sites in the eastern central Adriatic. At each month , the number of species recorded by beach seine without sac was slightly higher than that recorded by beach seine with sac. Species collected exclusively by both nets belonged to benthic or cryptic families. A greater percentage of specimens of families Sparidae, Pomacentridae and Labridae were in catches of beach seine without sac, since good swimmers probably escaped beach seine with sac according to its construction. More than 35% of fish juveniles were damaged and killed in catches of beach seine with sac. Differences in density and biomass between two nets were evident in both months, the mean fish density was two times higher (P<0.005) in beach seine with sac, the mean biomass three times higher (P<0.005). According to preliminary results we can conclude that beach seine without sac is more appropriate for sampling fish fry, especially for benefits of mariculture.
