Sažetak
Democratic changes have brought to Croatia, along with other things, a lot of news on a level of the means of mass communication. The speed of change has also resulted in a sudden increase in the number of publications (daily press) on the Croatian market, and in their varied offer to all kinds of readers. This paper (study) analyses the frequency of representation of bioethical issues in the Croatian daily newspaper ´Vjesnik´ during the first six months of 2007. The selected choice of this newspaper is personally author´s and is based on the foundings of recent surveys which have shown that this newspaper meets the requirements of professional journalism to a high degree. Therefore, it was interesting to apply the usual criteria for analysing newspaper articles to those on specific bioethical issues, frequently discussed in ´Vjesnik´. Bioethical issues are divided into six categories: 1)human rights, 2)bioethics and medical science, 3)sexuality and human reproduction, 4)society-health care and the quality of life, 5)addiction and 6)ecology.This analysis has shown that the most frequent bioethical issues, according to the number of published articles, are those in the area of medical science, protection of the environment and human rights. However, the analysis of the space devoted to each bioethical issue has shown another fact, related to the extensiveness of these isssues, which was measured by the length of the articles. Thus, according to the length of the articles devoted to each issue, the most frequently discussed bioethical issue is about the environment, and within this one the most dominant question is about the pollution. The second most frequent bioethical issue is about the society, health care and the quality of life and within this issue the most dominant question is about nourishment and genetically modified food, and only the third most frequent issue is about medical science. Within this issue the most dominant question is about new technologies and achievements in the field of biomedicine. None of the published articles has been of sensationalist character, without scientific or factual foundation. Moreover, according to an estimate of the author, if we take into consideration the delicacy of bioethical questions which go to the heart of human discretion and nature, we could say that the Croatian daily newspaper ´Vjesnik´ professionally treats and publishes articles on bioethical issues.
