Sažetak
The author lists c. 200 coins, unearthed chiefly during the post World War Two excavations of the rich complex site on the imposing Bribirska glavica, the ancient Varvaria, by the late Stjepan Gunjača and his team, as well as those by other archaeologists who succeeded him. Some of the numismatic material found by Fra Lujo Marun, Gunjača's predecessor and the founder of the Early Croatian archaeology, has also survived. Several coins, certainly more than thirty-odd specimens, all from Bribir, used to be kept at the old Zadar Archaeological Museum until the Worl War Two, as proved by the inventory book, which has also been studied by the author. On the whole, coins from this site can be found in four Croatian museums: the Zadar Arhaeological Museum, the Šibenik City Museum, the Split Museum of Croatian Antiquities and the collection which wa sonce shown on the site itself. The coins range from Greek (3 specimens, Cat. Nos 1.-3) to the 19th c. One of the most interesting one was a Roman Republican semis from Luceria dated to the 2nd c. B. C. Roman imperial coins (Cat. Nos 6-144) range from Augustus to Honorius and Arcadius, whereas the few Byzantine ones (Cat. Nos 145-147) were minted either by Justinian I. or Alexius III. Fifty – two coins are mediaeval or more recent. Among the latter one ought to mention the small silver from Mantua (Cat. No 161), Padua (No 186), Verona (Nos 187 - 191), and particulary Venice (Nos 162 sqq). These tiny silver coins were, together with those of Split, much in circulation in Dalmatia starting with the 13th c., as proved by several coin hoards and individual finds. Venetian coins stayed in circulations for the next few centuries, even after the Turkish conquest and destruction of the town of Bribir – one can be almost certain to find at least one 17th – 18th c. Venetian copper gazzetta struck for Dalmatia and Albania on any site excavated in these parts. Hungarian coins date from the 12th c. (No 197) onwards), but there are also several issued by Ludovic I. the Great, whose role in Dalmatia was a significant one. He also moved the Šubić family from Ostrovica and Bribir and gave them the Zrin demesne in the interior of Croatia, where they continued to flourish as the counts of Zrin until 1671. Three autonomous Split bagattini have also been found at Bribir (Nos 157 - 159), a fact which confirms their already known circulation zone. Let us also mention a Tyrolene kreuzer of Meinhard II. (No 154), a Bavarian pfennig of Heinrich IV. the Rich (No 192) and an Ottoman akcha, the unly numismatic evidence for the Turkish occupation. There are only two known coin hoards from Bribir, one containing c. eighteen Venetian, Austrian and German silverlings from the 12th – 14th c. (as witnessed by three letters by Lujo Marun to Josip Brunšmid in 1913), and another one, still unpublished: sixty – three Venetian, Anconitan and Slavonian silver coins. The Slavonian denars half – denars issued by Stephen IV. Babonić (1310 - 1316) and Mikac Mihaljević (1325 - 1343) prove, as do the written sources and our knowledge of history, that the links between continental and coastal Croatia have always been good and uninterrupted. A significant fact, which must not be overlooked is that there was a mint in Bribir in early 14th C., when the mighty lords Paul II., his brother Mladen I. and his son Mladen II. issued silver coins imitating Venetian grossi of the Matapan type, now very rare and sounght for. Incidentally, Paul Šubić's minor seal in copper, inscribed PAULUS*DE BREBERIO BANUS CROATORUM DNS ET BOSNE, was found in Zadar during the 1961 excavations.
