Sažetak
The aim of this paper was to examine and compare nasal component of the speech of hearing impaired children (N=19) and their hearing pairs (N=18). The objective assessment of the control of nasal emission was carried out by using NasalViev system (DRS Inc.) while the subjects were reading three different paragraphs – one containing all sounds of Croatian language in their standard proportion, one heavily loaded with nasal consonants and one containing all sounds of Croatian language in their standard proportion except nasal consonants. The paragraphs were constructed to test the ability of hearing impaired children to follow phonetically determined changes in velopharyngeal activity. For both groups of subjects the average nasalance scores were computed as percentages of nasal emission in readings of every paragraph separately. The average nasalance of the group of hearing impaired children and the group of hearing children was compared for the three readings and the differences between the groups were tested by using t-test. The group of children with hearing impairment produced exactly the same average nasalance as hearing children did when nasal consonants were absent from their utterances, but when utterances were heavily loaded with nasal consonants or contained nasal consonants in their usual proportion the children with hearing impairment produced significantly less nasalance than did the hearing children. Hearing impaired children did managed to follow drastic changes in velopharyngeal activity determined by testing material, but observed decrease in nasal emission in respect to hearing children shows that hearing impairment poses limitation on the control of the velopharyngeal function.
