Sažetak
Digital recordings were made of 21 deaf young adults reading a short Croatian story. The reading material was phonetically balanced to meet the standards of Croatian language. The recordings were presented to the listeners (four speech and language therapists) who were familiar only with the age and gender of the speaker. The listeners were asked to assess the voice quality of the subjects on five-point scale on following continuums: hyponasal - hypernasal, monotonous - varying, hypofunctional - hyperfunctional, and breathy-overtight. After the examination of reliability and validity of the perceptual assessments, the results were compared to the variables describing the hearing loss (onset time, hearing aid usage, stile of communication) and to overall intelligibility of the subjects’ performance, which was evaluated by the same judges. Although the preliminary results showed great individual differences among the subjects, they indicate the connection between the perceptual judgments of voice quality related to the extreme points of the selected continuums and overall speech intelligibility, as well as with variables describing hearing impairment, especially the onset time of hearing impairment.
