Sažetak
Non-indigenous crayfish species (NICS), namely signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) has been recorded in the Croatian part of the Mura River in 2008. . Its presence in the Mura River is probably a consequence of its spread from upstream segments of the river in Slovenia and Austria. The aim of this research was to examine life cycle of signal crayfish in the Mura River, its distribution and dispersal speed and differences in catch per unit effort (CPUE) between the recorded distribution front and the most upstream record. These data are essential for any future management activities aimed at control of this species. Research was performed from November 2008 to January 2010 and included examination of a total of 110 sites along the Croatian part of Mura River using baited LiNi traps. Signal crayfish life cycle indicated a longer period of activity in November and December when compared to the native species recorded previously in the basin, the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus). During the research of the distribution range, signal crayfish have been recorded up to 3 km from the confluence with the Drava River. Based on literature data and current recorded distribution front, downstream dispersal rate was between 18 – 24.4 km yr-1. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) in the period of increased crayfish activity (August-October) at the most downstream site was 5 times lower that the CPUE at the most upstream site. During the fieldwork performed in 2008-2009, no noble crayfish were caught in the Mura River. However, literature data suggest that the noble crayfish was present at some of the examined localities in 2007.
