Sažetak
The paper describes the role of family cohesion in gaining the family resilience and its efficacy in a period of stressful events. Resilience is the ability to withstand and rebound from crisis (Walsh, 2006.). Family resiliency is manifested in situations when impacts of risk factors are overwhelmed by protective family factors (supportive parenthood) and despite stressful circumstances (sickness, loss) family functioning successfully (practicing worm and supportive relationships) (Seccombe, 2001.). Important conditions for development of family resilience are mutual support, encouraging family climate as well as renewing and creating new personal competences (Walsh, 2006.). Through all three elements each family member is encouraged by common efforts to overcome the disruptive challenges. The experiences of collectiveness and joint endeavors involve many interactive processes in family, which empower family’s coping and adaptive strategies. The emotional support, cooperation and concrete help in a period of stressful circumstances are basic elements of connectedness, which is considered as key dimension of healthy family functioning, family cohesion and family resilience. Family cohesion is defined by Olson (1979.) as emotional connectedness and strong feeling of closeness (Alexis, Estrada, D. & Firpo-Jimenez, 2000.) and supportive interactions between family members (Barber & Buehrel, 1996.). Family resiliency is presented through the model of family strengths, which make family as resourceful unit in dealing with stressors and crises (Walsh, 2006.). The role of family cohesion in gaining and empowering the family resilience is discussed through practical implications.
