Sažetak
Kopački rit – one of the largest European freshwater wetlands – is under the influence of periodic flooding of the Danube and Drava rivers. The environment of land and water surfaces offers conditions for the existence of a great diversity in numbers and range of species. From the overview of the biota in the Kopački rit, it is no wonder that more than 1600 species have been registered to date. A great diversity of microphytic and plant communities, as well as animals, are an evidence of the ecological importance of Kopački rit as a rare ecosystem. Basic problems facing the ecosystem of Kopački rit arise from the water regime disrupted by various anthropogenic influences. Local and international measures must be taken to protect the wetland of Kopački rit.
