Sažetak
The proposed project Ombla is an unconvential underground powerplant located at the spring of the underground river Ombla north of Dubrovnik, Croatia. The project is based on the idea of creating an underground reservoir that would be formed within natural karst rock by a 130 m tall grout curtain. The project requires complex hydraulic structures for evacuation of flood flows that consist of outlet works with two cone valves of Howell-Bunger type and one slide gate and a spiralentrance vertical shaft spillway that can maintain stable water levels in the underground reservoir. Due to the complexity of hydraulic performance of the outlet works and the vertical shaft spillway, it was necessary to perform physical modeling. A physical model of complex hydraulic structures of the powerplant Ombla was constructed in scale 1:18 and used to test several versions of the design. Based on the results of physical modeling, the design was updated several times until a satisfactory and economical solution was found. Results of the study provide both general and specific information for the design of complex hydraulic structures.
