Sažetak
Aim of the study: To examine the relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke during fetal life and childhood and the prevalence of allergic disorders in the Medjimure-Cakovec County in Northwestern Croatia. Methods: The study was undertaken between January and April 2005 among the 12-14-year-old school children in 27 randomly selected elementary schools. A total of 3111 children participated in the study. Data were colected using standardized ISAAC written questionnaire. We added to the standard ISAAC questionnaries questiones about maternal smoking in pregnancy and passive smoking during the childhood. Results: The prevalence of symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic eczema in the previous 12 months was 5.11%, 10, 87%, and 5.34%, respectively. Maternal smoking during the pregnancy increased the risk of symptoms of atopic dermatitis during last 12 months(χ²=3.99 ; P=0.046 ; OR, 1.48 ; 95%CL 1.01-2.19) but decreased the risk for atopic eczema ever(χ²=5.72 ; P=0.017 ; OR, 0.64 ; 95%CL 0.45-0.92). We did not observe any relationship for wheezing and asthma or allergic rhinitis and hay fever and maternal smoking during pregnancy (P>0.05 for all). Exposure to passive smoking during the childhood decreased the risk for hay fever ever (χ²=4.28 ; P=0.038 ; OR, 0.75 ; 95% CL, 0, 58-0.99) but did not influence the risk for other allergic conditions and symptoms. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that environmental tobacco smoke in our population exhibitis a complex association with symptoms of allergic disorders in childhood probably influenced by other environmental factors.
