Sažetak
The paper on what are, at first glance, paradoxical terms – anthropology of animals, zooanthropology, and anthropo-zoology/anthrozoology – starts out from the cultural anthropologist Barbara Noske's premises, that she posited in her book Humans and Other Animals: Beyond the Boundaries of Anthropology (1989): "Alas, there exists no anthropology of animals, only an (anthropocentric) anthropology of humans in relation to animals." According to the tautological definition of William A. Haviland in his book, the university textbook of anthropology Cultural Anthropology (1st edition 1975, cf. 6th ed.), by which anthropology studies human beings, in the framework of which biological (physical) anthropology deals with biological organisms, while cultural anthropology does so with people as cultural animals. It could thus be concluded that animals are "uncultural animals", despite the undeniable fact that they, too, possess cultural patterns. Therefore, it is obvious that such anthropology excludes animals ; in other words, it includes them solely if the animals are used for cognition on the supernatural anthropos as "cultural animals". Along this line, the paper will be orientated to the idea of cultural animalistics that was initiated in this part of the world by Nikola Visković with his 1996 book Animal and Man: a contribution to cultural zoology and Cultural Animalistics, a miscellany of papers delivered at a scholarly conference held in Split in 1997. Finally, the paper will also present the objectives of the scholarly project Cultural Animalistics (Project Leader: Antonija Zaradija Kiš), which has been initiated by the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in Zagreb, along with the first outcome of the project in question – the collection of papers entitled Cultural Bestiary (eds. Suzana Marjanić and Antonija Zaradija Kiš, Zagreb, 2007).
