Sažetak
A description of the fish community and species of Lonjsko polje are given. Lonjsko polje is a wetland area in Central Croatia with exceptional ecological importance for the fish of the Sava River and probably a broader region. According to Croatian Nature Protection law the region of 95, 719 square kilometres is designated as a Nature Park. It is one of the largest partly unregulated floodplains in Europe. The area consists of flooded forests, swamps, meadows, ponds, oxbows, and backwater channels. During high water periods, when the area is completely flooded, a specific fish community enters the shallow and warmer waters to spawn or feed there. Twenty-eight species were identified belonging to 9 families: Petromyzonidae, Umbridae, Esocidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Siluridae, Centrarchidae, Percidae and Ameiuridae. The most common family is Cyprinidae, represented by 17 species. By the spawning strategy 11 species are phytophilous, 8 species phytolithophilous, 7 species lithophilous and 1 species ostracophilous. Diversity indices calculated as reciprocal Simpson's Index were between 1.829 and 9.581. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index ranged from 1.21 - 3.58 and was considered relatively small. Other diversity indices are also given.
