Sažetak
In this work we present new and compiled data on active tectonics, seismicity and fault plane solutions, used for identification and characterization of major seismogenic sources in the Adriatic coastal and offshore regions, seismically the most active parts of Croatia. Two seismogenic sources have been delineated in the northern sector of the Adriatic coastline region, i.e. in the Bay of Kvarner area: (i) the Ćićarija and (ii) the Ilirska Bistrica - Senj fault systems. The first represents the frontal NE- dipping thrust system in the northern part of the external Dinarides and makes the eastern boundary of the gently folded and aseismic block of stable Adria (Istria peninsula). The second Ilirska Bistrica - Senj fault system is composed of at least six faults in en échelon relationship traced along ca. 50 km long and 10 km wide zone. This zone is marked by outcropping Eocene-Miocene flysch sediments squeezed between folded Cretaceous carbonates and the 40° SW-dipping homocline of Paleo-Mesozoic rocks cropping out along coastline range of the Bay of Kvarner. The major seismogenic source in the southern Dalmatian sector of the Adriatic coastline region is the Ston-Dubrovnik fault system interpreted from reflection seismic profiles available from INA Oil Company. This fault system comprises set of NW-SE striking and NE-dipping thrusts traced from offshore Ston to offshore Dubrovnik area, formed as an out-of-sequence thrusts with respect to the Latest Miocene frontal thrusts in this part of the external Dinarides. The most representative seismogeic source in the central-southern sector of the Croatian Adriatic offshore SE of Zadar – Ancona line is the Jabuka-Andrija thrust system. Our data suggest that the ongoing seismotectonic activity along the Jabuka-Andrija thrust system is strongly localized, being associated with still active growth of salt diapirs, which are the most representative structural features of active tectonics in this part of the Adriatic offshore.
