Sažetak
Obesity is a well-known and proved high-risk factor for developing diabetes. The aim of the research was to confirm the hypothesis according to which the school children with a higher BMI (Body Mass Index) show higher values of sugar in blood, although there are still no clinical indications of the illness. Using the comprehensive method, 321 school children from the village Josipovac have been examined. The height and weight of the pupils were taken, as well as BMI, shown in percentiles adjusted to the age and sex of a child. 110 children (34, 27%) had an increased BMI value: boys (52 examinees or 47, 28%), girls (58 examinees or 52, 72%). All pupils with an increased BMI were taken blood glucose on an empty stomach. Incerased values were found with 21 examinees (19, 09%). They underwent OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test)- which is determining the level of blood glucose on an empty stomach and 120minutes after taking 75 g glucose in 250 ml water. Aftere the test 7 children (6, 36% high risk) were found to have diabetes and directed to further process of making diagnosis and treatment. The research has proven the value of preventive (screening) measures in early discovering of diabetes, and it is recommended as a cheap and reliable procedure in screening of the population.
