Sažetak
Previous research suggests that the ability to detect human faces should be maximized when the emotional expression has a survival value, i.e. when it conveys a warning or potential threat. In this study the efficiency of facial processing was examined by using a visual search paradigm, in which participants (50 male and female students) were asked to search for a discrepant face in matrices of otherwise identical faces. Simple schematic displays were used to represent four target displays: happy, sad, fear, and angry faces. The results indicate a fear superiority effect: in terms of both the accuracy and speed of detection, the participants were better at detecting the warning expression (fear face) than the sad and happy faces. This fear advantage may be due also to a relatively larger number of distinctive features in the schematic display of this emotion. When the crowd consisted of sad and angry faces, the detection of the discrepant face was generally less efficient. Perhaps due to their adaptive value, these facial expressions distract the attention and perception of other faces, and make it more difficult to recognize the target (discrepant) facial display in the crowd.
