Sažetak
Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) is a forest tree species on which man, spreading its area and intensively managing its forests, has had a significant influence during history. In Croatia sweet chestnut is spread in two main, split areas in different climate zones, on an area of over 135 000 ha. The larger part of the area spreads along central Croatia, from the Slovenian to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian border. Sweet chestnut can be found on all massifs of this region, whereas the biggest and most beautiful forests grow on the Zrinska and Petrova gora, as well as Medvednica. This is where we can find sweet chestnut mixed with oak, beech or hornbeam trees. Pure sweet chestnut coppices cover about 15 000 ha in this area. The second part of the sweet chestnut area belongs to the sub-Mediterranean region, including Istria and the islands of Cres and Krk. In Istria and on the island of Cres more attention is paid to sweet chestnut orchards for fruit cultivation. Today sweet chestnut in Croatia is extremely important for maintaining landscape and biological diversity, mainly in mixed forests of other species. Regardless of its decreased economic role, sweet chestnut is not losing popularity, primarily because of its tasty fruits, and every autumn its forests are certainly the most visited ones.
