Sažetak
A comprehensive investigation, aimed at identifying various organic contaminants, was carried on the main ladfill of the city of Zagreb using high-resolutin gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. An analytical procedure based on different enrichment techniques such as solvent extraction and solid phase ectraction, and subsequent silica gel fractionation was applied in order to cover broad spectrum of specific organic compounds. Among the most abundant compounds in the landfill were different pharmaceutical chemicals, in particular analgesics, propyphenazone, aminopyrine and phanacetin. The concentrations of the most prominent compound propyphenazone reached significant concentrations (up to 20 mg/kg). As a consequence, landfill leachates were shown to contain high levels of analgesic compounds and posed a major risk for the adjacent groundwater aquifer. Some of the pharmaceutical chemicals displayed rather high persistence in the anaerobic leachate plume and eventually reached groundwater aquifer.
