Sažetak
There are 3 different dimensions of relation between identification process and sport, presented in this article. First dimension deals with complex notion of national identity and its links with sports within Croatian context. Due to the special circumstances of war and recognition of independent Croatian state in 1991, sport became powerful tool in political attempts to broaden and empower “ foreign affairs” policies. National identity and sport could be presented in its neutral and affirmative form of “ patriotism” , as well as in its more destructive and negative forms of nationalism, xenophobia, ethnocentrism etc. Second dimension refers to special role of football hooliganism, where links between sport and identification (national, regional, subcultural) became emphasized and presented in its more extreme forms. Football fans played an interesting game with their own identity, where ascribed identities are mixed with achieved identities. Third dimension is focused on sport activity itself, in this case presented by actors involved in so called extreme sports, where one’ s sport participation becomes a basis for identification and self-perception. From the perspective of sociology of youth subcultures, last decade was marked by the new identities, such as bikers, boarders, rollers and many others. We pointed out examples from our own research in Croatian context.
