Sažetak
Objective: This investigation focused on the effect of additional disinfection of the root canal, with HealOzone, on microbial flora after traditional chemo-mechanical treatment. Methods: The study encompassed 44 patients with visible periapical processes up to 5 mm in length. Patients were divided into three groups. First group were patients with exposed pulp chamber (opened). The second group consisted of patient who needed revision because of inadequate root canal fillings (revised), and the third group consisted of patients with pulp necrosis where apical process was discovered accidentally by Rtg control (closed). For each patient three swabs were taken: at the beginning of treatment, after traditional root canal instrumentation with abundant irrigation using 2, 5% sodium hypochlorite and after ozone treatment lasting 40 sec. Swabs were taken using sterile paper points and then immersed in WMGA transport medium for anaerobes. After the microbiological analysis of the samples, the obtained results were statistically analyzed with SPSS computer program. Results: Decrease in number of bacteria was highly statistically significant for category ‘ opened', p<0.001 for aerobes as well as for anaerobes. For category ‘ revised', decrease was p<0.001 for aerobic, and p<0.05 for anaerobic bacteria. For category ‘ closed', decrease was p<0.05 for both aerobes and anaerobic bacteria. Conclusions: Decrease in number of bacteria after the additional treatment with ozone was highest in category 'opened', then in category 'revised' and the lowest decrease vas in category 'closed'. Regardless of diagnosis an additional disinfection of the root canal is needed for which treatment with HealOzone is very efficient. This study was supported by MZOS project 065-0352851-0410.
